The Green Party of Ohio has conducted its biennial convention, nominating presidential candidate Jill Stein with the overwhelming support of the party. The final tally of the voting was: 38 votes for Jill Stein, 2 for Roseanne Barr, 1 for Kent Mesplay and 1 for Dennis Kucinich. (Our members were allowed to write-in a candidate of their choice and that is why we have a vote for Dennis Kucinich, who is not a Green.)
Dr. Stein addressed the convention as its keynote speaker. She has a real plan, the Green New Deal, to tackle the problems we face in this country. For more information on this plan, see http://www.jillstein.org/
Dr. Stein is a warm, energetic, engaging individual, who, despite her petite size, is a powerhouse of personality who puts a positive spin on our efforts to build the Green Party, unify its diverse membership and effect real political change. I was honored to meet her, inspired by her determination and empowered through her courage in the face of adversity.
Roseanne Barr, who threw her hat in the ring very recently, was invited to the convention as well, but her campaign staff felt like there was not enough time for them to pull together a visit. Ms. Barr is a qualified candidate and a registered Green in California. We all look forward to the attention and media exposure that a celebrity of her stature will bring to our party. She and Dr. Stein have both expressed their willingness to work together for everyone’s benefit.
Candidates Kent Mesplay and Harvey Mikkelson were also invited, but could not attend.
The party membership voted to endorse both of its Senatorial candidates, Anita Rios and Joe DeMare. We are pleased to have two excellent, qualified candidates in this race.
