PROTESTORS FACE NEW DAY OF CHALLENGERS, By Leana Donofrio
Anti-war protesters clashed with Kent police on East Main Street yesterday as they tried to march downtown, resulting in at least 10 arrests.
More than 150 protesters were met by police in riot gear and a State Highway Patrol helicopter hovering close overhead on East Main as they chanted, "The people united will never be defeated" and "This is what democracy looks like."
The confrontation came after the commemoration of the death of four Kent State students, who were shot by the Ohio National Guard during an anti-war protest in 1970.
The protest began on Manchester Field shortly after the end of the May 4 commemoration.
After leaving Manchester Field and marching to the street, protesters were warned to disperse or be arrested.

QUIET AFTER THE STORM, By Megan Burgasser
Shortly after the annual candlelight march began on the Commons Saturday night, the rain suddenly stopped as about 150 people moved together toward Front Campus in a silent line of flickering candles.
"It's important that we remember what happened in 1970 -- that four students were killed when they didn't do anything wrong," said Adria Crannell, co-chair of the May 4 Task Force and a junior psychology major.
In years past, Crannell said, rambunctious fraternity members on Franklin Street have disrupted the silence. This year, Seth Kujat, co-chair elect of the task force, asked the fraternity houses to respect the march. The noise of onlookers was not heard this time, and the march proceeded silently and solemnly toward Main Street.
Mary Wagley, a senior history and philosophy major, said she was moved by two students who joined the march along the route. Wagley said they asked a police officer what going on and then "looked at their watches and jumped in."
President Carol Cartwright, Jackson State President Ronald Mason, Jr., Joseph Danks, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Nancy Burke, a retired librarian in the archives, were the four symbolic candle bearers of the march.

4) KSU STUDENT PLANS TO RUN FOR KENT CITY COUNCIL
***************************************************
By Ben Fischer, Daily Kent Stater
A Kent State student is eyeing a run for a spot on the Kent City Council in the fall elections, trying to become the first student elected in almost 30 years.
Julie Gumerman, a junior integrated language arts and English major, is preparing to run as a write-in candidate in the Fourth Ward, which covers most of the campus.
"I'm really into politics and I think this is the best way to change policies so I agree with them," Gumerman said. "If you're actually in office, you have a much bigger say in what's going on."
Gumerman will officially run as an independent, but her Web site -- julieforcouncil.org -- promotes her close ties with the Green Party. Gumerman is also an active member of campus organizations such as Students Eliminating Environmental Destruction and the Coalition for a Humane and New Global Economy.
Despite her involvement with campus activism, Gumerman said her primary focus as a council member would be as a general student advocate.
"My main issue is that I'm a student here and I'll be a student voice on city council representing every student here," she said. "But I'll also be going to various activist groups and emphasizing my environmentalism and commitment to social justice."
Gumerman will have to launch her campaign as a write-in candidate because of residency requirements. Currently a resident in Koonce Hall, she actually lives in the Sixth Ward. She's waiting until she moves into Harbourt Hall in August to become a resident of the Fourth Ward. By then, it will be too late to get on the ballot.
No one has officially announced a candidacy in the Fourth Ward. Current councilman Robert Felton declined to seek another term, and neither major party has candidates in Tuesday's primary election.
Gumerman admits running as a write-in candidate could pose problems.
"I need to get out and go door-to-door to meet people and to make sure they know how to spell my name," she said. "We need to convince students that in this race, their vote really does count."

5) SMITHSONIAN NO SAFE HAVEN FOR EXHIBIT ON ARCTIC WILDLIGE REFUGE
***************************************************
Things had been going along pretty well in the improbable life of Subhankar Banerjee, a native of Calcutta, India, who has become perhaps the leading photographer of one of the coldest and most uninhabited places on earth, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
A physicist by training who learned photography from fellow shutterbugs in the off hours at Boeing, Mr. Banerjee found a publisher for a book of his wildlife photos and was granted an exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History.
Then, in a March 18 floor debate about oil drilling in the refuge, a senator urged every member to read Mr. Banerjee's book before calling the refuge a frozen wasteland. Suddenly Mr. Banerjee's work was being promoted on C-Span one of the highest honors of his life, he said.
But it has been nothing but trouble ever since. The Smithsonian exhibit will still open on Friday, though in a much different version than what had been scheduled. Mr. Banerjee and the book's publisher say members of the Smithsonian told them that the museum had been pressured to cancel or sharply revise the exhibit of birds, caribou, musk oxen and other images he had photographed.
Smithsonian officials say that no pressure was applied and that the changes to the show it was moved from the main floor rotunda to a lower-level room, and captions were deleted and truncated are part of the routine, last-minute preparations for a major exhibition.
Now Mr. Banerjee, who had hoped to discuss the journey of the buff-breasted sandpiper or what it is like to be stuck in a tent with a wind-chill temperature of minus 80 degrees, finds himself in a political storm.

6) GREENS CALL WORLDWIDE WATER PRIVATIZATION THEFT OF PUBLIC RESOURCES
***************************************************
"The world's water supply is being stolen," said Ben Manski, Wisconsin Green and co-chair of the Green Party of the United States. "While attention has focused on the invasion of Iraq and the economy, officials at local, national, and international levels are quietly transferring public ownership and control of fresh water over to powerful corporations."
Greens point to evidence of the devastating economic and ecological effects of water privatization: higher prices and more frequent billing; neglected infrastructure; increased use of concrete and steel in environmentally harmful dams and pipes instead of measures to conserve water; bribery of public officials and cronyism in the awarding of contracts; wasteful salaries and bonuses for water company execs.
"Public officials are handing control over fresh water to corporations with little public knowledge or comment," said Badili Jones, Georgia Green and also a national party co-chair. "This is a matter of theft, after generations of Americans and people in other countries worked hard to build public water services."
According to leaked documents obtained and analyzed by Center for Public Integrity's International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, European Union trade representatives have asked 72 countries to open up their markets to private water companies during recent WTO negotiations.
Such a decision could turn control over U.S. water markets not only to American firms, but to European corporations such as Suez and Vivendi of France and the German-British conglomerate RWE-Thames. Corporations already control water systems used by more than 40 million people throughout North America, including about 15% of U.S. water systems. The mayor and city council of Stockton, California barred public scrutiny of a contract to grant control over water to OMI-Thames Water, a joint venture of American and British firms, with the excuse that the $600 deal was too complex for the public to understand.
"Deals like the one in Stockton prove that corporate influence over politicians overrides the lessons learned from Enron," said Alison "Sunny" Maynard, Colorado Green Party co-chair and water lawyer who has fought several cases to protect instream flows.
"The World Water Council and Global Water Partnership, organizers of the World Water Forum in Kyoto, Japan in March, expected those who attended to approve their plans to privatize water around the world," said Annie Goeke, co-chair of the Green Party's International Committee. "But public interest activists rejected these plans, and many instead signed on to the 'Water is Life' statement affirming that drinking water is a human right not to be placed under corporate ownership."

The "New World Order" in the News
1. Blair Trying to Sell "The New World Order"
In a meeting recently, British Prime Minister Tony Blair tries to sell Russian President Vladimir Putin on a "New World Order," where the rest of the world will work in partnership with the U.S. or there will be continual division. Putin became highly aggravated during the meeting stating that the "New World Order" would only occur in a democratic fashion; not where the U.S. tells the rest of the world what will be done. Also, Putin said sanctions on Iraq will not be lifted until the UN Security Council lifts them. Putin demanded to know where Saddam is and where are the "weapons of mass destruction."
Needless to say the meeting didn't go well, or at least that is the way the story is told. If Putin is highly upset over the "New World Order" he has every right to be. It is hard to believe that the Russians could have been as foolish to let the U.S. take over Central Asia and gain almost complete control of the Middle East while Russia did little to stop it. Supposedly Russia, Germany, and France are strategically rethinking ways to counteract the "New World Order" Empire. I don't know what their game plan is, but if there was a game plan in the past it didn't work.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/russia/article/0,2763,946322,00.html
2. The Administration is on Message
Pentagon advisor Richard Perle tells a French newspaper that the U.S. will not stop at Afghanistan and Iraq. Perle says that there are other countries with weapons of mass destruction that work with terrorists and the U.S. will deal with those countries. Perle also says that the UN charter needs to be changed since it is outmoded and not meant to deal with terrorist countries.
So, we are witnessing the same type of set up on Syria and Iran that we saw with Iraq. A constant drumbeat of accusations from the Administration regarding "weapons of mass destruction" and terrorism while at the same time Bush says that he has no plans for war now.
This formula worked so well with Iraq that the Administration must believe that there is no reason to change the strategy.
http://thescotsman.co.uk/international.cfm?id=475832003
3. Iraqi-Al Qaeda Link Conveniently Found By Several Different Papers
Cynics question the recent find of supposedly "top secret" information linking Al Qaeda with Iraq. Any clear thinking person should be a cynic on this type of discovery. Although some sort of relationship could have existed between Osama and Saddam, the CIA never made the link and even expressed doubts last summer that there was a link.
So, we are presented with a scene were documents are laying all over the Iraqi's secret service headquarters in plain site while a number of journalists from different papers discover them (as I write this I am grinning). Although the U.S. has had access to the area for weeks, we are supposed to believe the CIA or other U.S. intelligence experts didn't sweep through the area and look for incriminating information before our bumbling reporters from several different papers found the obvious lying all over.
You know, this is a stretch for me to believe. But I am going to do my best since I want to remain a loyal true blue American. I wouldn't want anyone to question my patriotism.

4. The Game
At the same time Bill Clinton was acting as if he was against Bush's policies on the war with Iraq, Clinton was secretly offering advice to Tony Blair on how to bring around world opinion for a future strike on Iraq.
This is typical of the pretend game that exists in American and World politics. In this country, Republican and Democrats, are playing for the same team; but they just present different scenarios to fool the gullible. Ultimately, the outcomes are the same and the Military Industrial Complex continues to grow an Empire. All throughout Clinton's presidency bombs were falling, yet he presented a nicer more thoughtful face. Clinton sold out the unions and the working people while at the same time working for the Globalists (remember NAFTA). At least with Bush, he is fooling no one except those conservatives that are practically brain dead. Let's wake up and seek a real change.

5. Whatever Happened to Kosovo?
Although Kosovo has long been forgotten by the American public, the U.S. has a base there and the Americans and the UN are still running the show. The Albanians are losing patience as political and economic problems grow worse in Kosovo. Still many years after the war, there is no independent democratically elected government in Kosovo.
Most forget that Bill Clinton claimed 100,000 bodies would be recovered by Allied forces because of an ethnic cleansing blood bath that was supposed to have occurred in Kosovo. Later, it was estimated that probably 100 people might have been killed in ethnic violence although no one could say for sure if even those people were ethnically cleansed.
Clinton initiated an attack with the backing of NATO and the approval of the UN (although a Security Council Vote was never sought). The U.S. brought the Kosovo War to the people of Serbia; hitting neighborhoods and hospitals in Belgrade, killing civilians, and destroying civilian infrastructure. The War has been forgotten in the U.S., but occupation continues.
We might be able to see the future of Iraq in the Kosovo of today.

6. Secret Tests On American Citizens
The army has been conducting tests on civilian populations in Oklahoma. The Army is up front about the tests and they say there is nothing to worry about. Or at least that is what they say. But during the 50's, in the height of the Cold War, the army did tests on citizens of Oklahoma and throughout the country; and those tests resulted in deaths when highly toxic chemicals were sprayed on citizens. The tests went on for 20 years and one of the chemicals used was Zinc Cadmium, a highly toxic chemical in minute doses.
What we are being exposed to today is anybody's guess. But, I suppose it will be found in 40 or 50 years that during the height of the terrorism scare of the early century many citizens were deliberately exposed to this or that agent by the government. Hopefully, we will have some freedoms left or that story will never get reported.

7. 1943 U.S. Document Acknowledges Dangers of Depleted Uranium
Before the Manhattan Project had produced the first atom bomb, before the first "Trinity" test, before the 'War Department' became the Defense Department, before there even was a Pentagon building; the U.S. MILITARY PLANNED TO USE DEPLETED URANIUM AS AN OFFENSIVE WEAPON TO IRRADIATE AND POISON ENEMY SOLDIERS.
- A declassified document from a 1943 War Department memo (Oak Ridge) suggests the use of radioactive dust as an offensive weapon, depicting the damage it will wreak on the bodies of those who are exposed; and how to maximize exposures even if the enemy uses preventative measures.

8. Ending Pentagon Whistleblower and Ethics Protections
"Defense Transformation for the 21st Century Act"
Critics call it the "Halliburton Bill of Rights" Here are some of the guidelines:
-A civilian employee at the Pentagon who reports illegal dumping by the military of, say, nuclear waste would have zero job protections for blowing the whistle.
- Contains exemptions from anti-pollution and wildlife protection laws for domestic Pentagon operations, and would repeal scores of reporting requirements by which Congress keeps tabs on Pentagon actions.
Great ideas necessary to defeat terrorists....

9. MR. PRESIDENT, PLEASE ATTACK APPALACHIA
"So Mr. President, you have all the elements you need: weapons of mass destruction, a nearly third world enemy, potential terrorists, someone to call evil, and an easy path to victory. Now all you have to do is attack. And please, do it soon. We need the
reparations, better schools, better infrastructure, universal healthcare, and a fair share in the wealth of our own resources.
You also promised Iraq democracy. We could use that here as well.
Please, Mr. President, attack Appalachia next."

10. Working Overtime With No Extra Pay
The 40 hour work week is a distant memory for most Americans, and Republicans in the House and Senate are working to make sure that many Americans will not be getting paid overtime for their extra work. Instead of being paid overtime, employees working over 40 hours a week will not be allowed the extra pay under new rules being proposed that will erode the Fair Labor Standards Act. Basically, the new rules will reclassify some workers and other workers will be designated as not eligible for the extra pay.
An estimated 80 million Americans will be effected by a House and Senate version of an Act which will include the smokescreen words "Family Time."
In present day Orwellian America liberty means occupation, security means the end of privacy, freedom means the ability to shop, and "family time" means more work with less pay.

11. Ideological Purging
Documents are quietly being removed from key government websites such as the Department of Education and Health and Human Services because they run counter to the current Administration's policies and objectives. The content is being removed if it doesn't meet 5 criteria; and 2 of the criteria has to do with not meeting Administration philosophy and Administration goals. Ideological compatibility of government information is similar to what we find in George Orwell's 1984 in which:
"the government controls all of its citizens in their daily activities and, ultimately, in their thoughts..... destroying every kind of literature or documentation which might conceivably hold any political or ideological significance."
George Orwell had a prophetic message for modern day Americans.

12. European Union Pushing the Privatization of Water
There has been speculation about a plans to privatize water around the world. Leaked documents and e-mails have shown that the European Union has asked 72 countries to privatize their water. The information was obtained by the Center of Public Integritys International Consortium of Investigative Journalists from a watchdog group based in Amsterdam. The water companies have been privately lobbying the European Union to privatize water and evidently it is working.
Drink up and enjoy your water recourses now because multi-nationals will be selling your water recourses to the highest bidder. Looks like another benefit of the "New World Order."

13. U.S. Sugar Lobby Threatens World Health Organization
The World Health Organization says that eating sugar is bad for your teeth and can lead to obesity. Seems sensible, but not to the sugar lobby which says the WHO is using old data. The lobby threatens to ask Congress to withhold the 400 million America contributes to the WHO.
We have the best government money can buy so the Sugar Lobby may get its wish.

14. The Future is Now
Bio-ethicists and some scientists worry that genetic engineering will divide the human race into different classes of people that will one day turn on each other in an attempt to destroy each other. The fear is that the rich and powerful will genetically engineer the best and the brightest offspring that will turn into some type of super race that will use and abuse the offspring from the poor. There will be regular humans, and the super intelligent and physically superior genetically altered race, working against each other.
This is a variation of what exists today where the rich and the powerful use and abuse the poor and the powerless of the world to take advantage of near slave labor as they gain control of natural recourses around the world.
This form of colonialization (globalization) that we have today is leading to wars and human misery. Genetic engineering sounds as if it will just continue the process.

15. Prince Charles Questions New Technology
Prince Charles has fears about the "Brave New World" being created. Previously he has spoken out about GM foods, and now he is calling attention to nanotechnology which seeks to create new matter at the atomic level were the substance will take on a life of its own. However, the Prince worries that the new matter will interfere with the natural world, and create a mess for humanity.
Our technology is speeding years ahead of the wisdom needed to handle it for the benefit of humans and all living species.
The Prince has every reason to be concerned. We should all be concerned, and there should be public debate. We should seek a better understanding of our new technology and its implications before implementing it.

A Better Way!
16. Good News for Greens, Wisconsin, and Eventually the Country
Four new Green Party members were elected in local Wisconsin elections, and in some races Greens lost by slim margins in the state. The Greens are gaining momentum in Wisconsin, and in some cities in the state they are the second party behind the Democrats. Wisconsin and Minnesota are incubators for strong progressive third-parties, according to political science professor Lawrence Jacobs, a nationally respected authority on third party politics from the University of Minnesota. The Green Party is emerging as a strong third-party in Wisconsin, and that may mean good news for prospects around the country.
Let's go Greens! The country needs us, they just aren't aware of it yet.

17. Europe Looking To Hydrogen
The world's first hydrogen powered filling station has opened up in Iceland. Other hydrogen powered filling stations will open across Europe. The venture into hydrogen has the backing of Daimler-Chrysler, Royal Dutch Shell and the European Union. Evidently Europe is looking for cleaner energy that will bypass the need for wars to maintain energy supplies. If America didn't have such a big war industry, we might be taking hydrogen seriously for our future energy needs.

18 Saying Yes to Humanity
We can say no to the process of dehumanization. This is something we can all do every day in our thoughts, words, and actions. It is a heart felt commitment where we try to treat people in a humane and respectful way. We can practice not adding to the misery of others; in fact we can go out of our way to make the burdens of others lighter. In the same way that we are able to do this in our own little world, we can also work to try to make a difference in our larger world and in society. The choices and actions that each of us make on a daily basis add up to a picture of who and what we are as a society. We can choose to focus on relationships and compassionate living rather than the mindless consumerism that we have been conditioned to accept. We can practice letting go of attachments and selfish grasping, and say yes to an open mind and an open heart where the well being of others is an important consideration. Choosing to live humanely is something that !
needs to be practiced on a daily basis, and there is no perfection just a commitment to try. The fruits of such a life will bring joy and contentment to those that practice it, living humanely will also have a beneficial ripple effect throughout our society. This is our choice everyday.

8) RUN FOR OFFICE AS A GREEN PARTY CANDIDATE
***************************************************
The Green Party of Ohio Calls for Candidates for the 2003 & 2004 Elections.
The Green Party is looking for progressives to run for elected office.
Across the US already, 178 Green office holders in 24 states are hard at work. They are creating public policy on important issues including civil rights, a living wage, affordable housing, alternative voting systems, and peace. They are advocating for peace and opposing urban sprawl and expansion of corporate power. Green office holders ran to make an immediate impact on their communities as town council members, county commissioners, school board members etc. These Greens reached out to voters of diverse backgrounds, brought together coalitions of community organizations and individuals to begin to reclaim their local governments.
The growth and movement of the Green Party continues in 2003 and toward 2004. All across the country hundreds of Green Party candidates will be challenging the two establishment parties. Here in Ohio this year all kinds of local offices are up for election, from city councils to school boards to township trustees. In 2004, one of our US Senate seats, seats in the US Congress, the Ohio State Senate and House of Representatives and other local offices will be contended.
Two-thousand three and 2004 will be a great time for candidates to learn the art of running for office, and a smart, energetic candidate could win. You can run too. Please consider becoming a candidate for elective office this year. We especially encourage people who are under-represented in elective office to consider running: women, African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans, gays and lesbians, people with disabilities, young people and other minorities. If you or someone you know is considering running, please contact The Green Party of Ohio Candidates Committee whose contact information can be found on The Green Party web page.
We are also looking for people to work with these candidates: campaign coordinators, managers and other campaign volunteers.
The Green Party is a grassroots activist party working for social change based on our Ten Key Values. To learn more please visit he Green Party of Ohio web page: http://www.ohiogreens.org
