6) FUNDS STILL NEEDED FOR SUPREME COURT CASE ***************************************************
Late in the summer of 2000, the Nader/LaDuke campaign, along with the Green
Party, filed suit in the U.S. District Court in Columbus, Ohio in order to
challenge Ohios ballot cue statute (Nader, et al v. Blackwell).
Although Nader won this suit on October 13, 2000, Secretary of State Kenneth
Blackwell received a stay from a panel of the 6th Circuit Court before the
election, and on January 30, 2001, the same panel found Naders case
to be without merit. A subsequent effort to get the entire 6th Circuit Court
to rehear the case was denied on March 28, 2002. However, in late June, Terry
Lodge, attorney for the Green Party of Ohio, petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court
to review the case. The
Green Party of Ohio needs to raise $3,000 for this case. Please send your
$35, $50, $100 or more contribution today to the Green Party of Ohio Federal
PAC, Paul Dumouchelle, Treasurer, 8832 Nairn Ct., Dublin OH 43017. Contributions
to the Green Party of Ohio Federal PAC are not deductible for federal tax
purposes. ***************************************************

8) CLEAN ENERGY FOR SAN DIEGO AND CALIFORNIA ***************************************************
San Diego Mayor Dick Murphy is following through with his energy independence
goal he set at the start of his term. The San Diego City Council approved
a pilot solar electricity project that will provide 20% of the Metropolitan
Operations Center building's energy, while also reducing the City's energy
bill by $10,200 a year. The Greenpeace Clean Energy Now! campaign is urging
the Mayor to also take the next step and champion a first- rate solar
revenue bond that will make San Diego the nation's leader in solar energy.

Greenpeace's campaign in San Diego: http://www.cleanenergynow.org/california/sdsolaryes.html To
read more about the solar project, go to: http://www.californiasolarcenter.org/solareclips/2002.10/20021001-10.html Solar
energy is here to stay in California. Governor Davis finally signed Assembly
Bill 58 into law. This legislation has huge implications for the solar economy
in California, allowing large solar-based electricity generating systems to
hook into the grid and receive retail electricity rates for the electricity
produced -- thereby making solar energy much more affordable. To

9) MENTAL ILLNESS AWARENESS WEEK -- OCT. 7-13 ***************************************************
Mental Illness Awareness (MIA) Week, Oct. 7-13, is a time to consider the
perceptions of people who struggle with mental illness. A new perception of
mental illness is emerging, one that focuses on early intervention, effective
treatment, rehabilitation and recovery. One
in 5 Americans, or 44 million people, suffer from a mental disorder in any
given year. 20% of our children experience a diagnosable mental illness each
year. For information

10) EXCHANGE EMAILS THROUGH A HANDSHAKE ***************************************************
Two Japanese telecoms giants have developed techno- logy that turns the human
body into a broadband-paced link that allows e-mail addresses to be exchanged
through a simple handshake. http://news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,5239758%255E13762,00.html ***************************************************
11) EMPLOYEE HEALTH PLANS TO JUMP 15% IN COST ***************************************************
Large companies will pay on average 15% more to pro- vide health plans for
their employees in 2003 than they did this year, according to a survey by
consult- ing firm Towers Perrin that found health costs are increasing
"even faster than feared," the Wall Street Journal reports. The
survey is based on responses from 268 large companies regarding the amount
they agreed to pay for employee health plan premiums in 2003. Jim Foreman,
managing director of Towers Perrin' global health practice, said businesses
are unlikely to find quick solutions for the increasing costs. He added,
"It's really a conundrum. Businesses can't charge their customers 15%
more." The survey indicates that many large companies are likely to seek
out "consumer-driven" health plans, which shift much of health plan
cost increases to employees. Some companies also might con- sider employee
health plans under which workers receive a lump sum to spend on health care.
"Most of our clients have investigated it. We'll see most big organizations
move forward next year," Foreman said. According to the survey, employees
will be responsible for 22% of the cost for family coverage in 2003, compared
with 21% in 2002. On average, large business employees will pay $160 per
month for family coverage in 2003, compared with $134 per month in 2002. Employees
purchasing individual health plans will pay 19% of their health costs
in 2003, up from 17% in 2002 the survey says. Those employees will pay about
$48 per month for coverage in 2003, compared with $38 in 2002. ***************************************************
12) CHILD POVERTY UNCHANGED BUT DATA IS TROUBLING ***************************************************
The latest Census Bureau data show the share of chil- dren in poverty remained
relatively stable between 2000 and 2001, growing to 16.3% from 16.2%, while
black and Hispanic child poverty fell slightly during that period, to 30%
and 27.4%, respectively. This good news is overshadowed by increases in overall
U.S. poverty, which expanded to 11.7% in 2001 from 11.3% in 2000. Poverty
increased only among whites and in the South. This is the first increase in
poverty in eight years. Poverty is still low by historical standards --
and minority child poverty is the lowest it's been in 20 years although Wendell
Primus, director of income security at the Center on Budget & Policy
Priorities, expects it to get worse. Based
on unpublished census data, children in poverty got poorer between 2000-2001.
Poor families' incomes fell farther below the federal poverty line than they
have since 1979, the center says in a report, Census Data Show Increases in
Extent & Severity of Poverty & Decline in Household Income. Poverty
is increasing because of the 2001 recession and the job losses it caused.
About 2 million people have lost their jobs in the past two years. Visit
the Center on Budget & Policy Priorities at: http://www.cbpp.org Also,
according to the Children's Defense Fund, the number of kids living in extreme
poverty (50% of the official poverty line or below) increased by over 300,000.
