14) HELP SUPPORT THE SUPREME COURT CASE: $3,000
*************************************************** Late in the summer of
2000, the Nader/LaDuke campaign, along with the Green Party, filed suit in
the U.S. District Court in Columbus, Ohio in order to challenge Ohios
ballot cue statute (Nader, et al v. Blackwell). Although Nader won this suit
on October 13, 2000, Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell received a stay
from a panel of the 6th Circuit Court before the election, and on January
30, 2001, the same panel found Naders case to be without merit. A subsequent
effort to get the entire 6th Circuit Court to rehear the case was denied
on March 28, 2002. However, in late June, Terry Lodge, attorney for the Green
Party of Ohio, petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to review the case. The
court filing cost money as will the case itself if it is heard. To date, $300
has been raised for this effort. Estimates are that an additional $3,000 will
be needed. Please send your $35, $50, $100 or more contribution today
to the Green Party of Ohio Federal PAC, Paul Dumouchelle, Treasurer, 8832
Nairn Ct., Dublin OH 43017. Contributions to the Green Party of Ohio Federal
PAC are not deductible for federal tax purposes.***************************************************
15) LIVING PLANET REPORT 2002 AVAILABLE ONLINE
*************************************************** The Living Planet Report
shows that humans are cur- rently running a huge deficit with the Earth -
using over 20% more natural resources each year than can be regenerated
- and this figure is growing each year. Projections based on likely scenarios
of population growth, economic development and technological change, show
that by 2050, humans will consume between 180% and 220% of the Earth's biological
capacity. According to the report, this means that unless governments take
urgent action, by 2030, human welfare, as measured by average life expectancy,
educational level, and world economic product will go into decline. However,
current trends are moving humanity away from achieving this minimum requirement
for sustainability, not towards it. The global ecological footprint has
grown from about 70% of the planet's biological capa- city in 1961 to about
120% of its biological capacity in 1999.***************************************************

10) AUGUST 14: A CALL FOR ACTION ***************************************************
Over 8 million people are unemployed, the largest number in ten years. Nearly
2 million unemployed workers are running out of federal extended benefits.
For the first time since the Great Depression, millions of low income families
have no safety net to protect them, because of arbitrary welfare time limits.
Millions of American's seniors and working families face soaring health costs.
Over 40 million Americans have no health insurance at all.August
14th is the 67th Anniversary of the Social Security Act. A CALL TO ACTION
for "Jobs, a strong Safety Net, Health Care for All and Lower Prices
for Prescription Drugs" is being organized by a newly formed network
of people involved in economic justice movements. August 14 is the kick-off
date of the campaign. Most cities will have their news conference/action over
the next month. Local Green Parties may use the August 14 actions to begin
or continue to build coalitions and links with local groups concerned with
welfare, homeless, unemployment in your community. ***More: http://www.ohiogreens.org/features/020803/august14.html***************************************************
11) IRISH GREENS CALL FOR TAX ON JUNK FOOD ***************************************************
The Green Party of Ireland has called for a tax on junk food and for free
fruit and vegetables to be distributed to children at school. Backing a proposal
from the Irish Heart Foundation, party leader Trevor Sargent TD said that,
as the Government argued that revenue from alcohol and tobacco taxes was necessary
to help treat the damaging effects on the health of society, junk food should
be taxed in the same way.***************************************************
