3) HUMANITY WILL PAY FOR ABUSE OF ENVIRONMENT ***************************************************
Unless governments take urgent action to encourage a more sustainable way
of life, human welfare will go into drastic decline by 2030 with falls in
average life expectancies, lower educational levels and a shrinking economy,
the WWF's Living Planet Report 2002 says. Exploitation of the Earth's renewable
resources has grown by 80% in the past 40 years and is now 20% higher than
the natural capacity of the planet to replenish itself, the report, published
Tuesday, says.According to the report, the Earth has about 11.4 billion
hectares of productive space on land and sea, which means about 1.9 hectares
(about 4.7 acres) for each of the 6 billion people on the planet. Yet the
average consumption per head of population is equiva- lent to about 2.3 hectares
(about 5.7 acres) per person. This "ecological footprint" varies
enormously when differences in lifestyle are taken into account. The typical
African, for instance, consumes resources equi- valent to 1.4 hectares of
land, whereas for the average European it is 5 hectares (about 12.4 acres),
rising to 9.6 hectares (about 23.7 acres) for the typical American. ***More:

4) WHITE HOUSE AMAZING CORPORATE MISADVENTURES ***************************************************
The avalanche of corporate scandals and White House double talk got your head
spinning? What is it that makes Bush and Cheney part of the problem and not
the solution? Investigative journalist Stephen Pizzo gives us a quick
primer on what George W. Bush and Dick Cheney might have to hide. ***More:

5) OHIO PARTY SUPPORTS CANDIDATE'S STAND IN CA ***************************************************
The following resolution was passed by the Green Party of Ohio Coordinating
Committee on July 13 in support for the Coalition Against Police Abuse, the
Donovan Jackson Justice Committee and California Green Party Lt. Gov.
candidate Donna Jo Warren: "The Green Party of Ohio sends its support
to the Coalition Against Police Abuse, the Donovan Jackson Justice Committee
and to California Green Party candi- date for Lt. Governor Donna Jo Warren
in their demand for police accountability and an end to the pattern of
police abuse in the Greater Los Angeles Area and across the country."Citizens
of all races and incomes must be able to count on police officers for the
vital services they are commissioned to provide - as protectors of community
safety and as keepers of peace. Excessive use of force, unequal and discriminatory
application of the law, racial profiling and the so-called 'war on drugs'
all serve to undermine the community's trust and thereby to increase the
difficulties faced by honest and dedicated police officers attempting to carry
out their benevolent duties. "Let us be clear; these problem
are not only caused by the errant actions of a few officers and they will
not be solved by any 'bad apple' approach penalizing and re- moving only
those officers who commit crimes of abuse. "We must make a critical
examination of our entire criminal justice system and work to establish greater
accountability as well as to address core issues of, racism and discrimination
and to focus on programs of cooperation and prevention more than suppression
and apprehension. We support programs of community policing and community
service and believe these are necessary in order to foster and sustain relationships
of trust. **More: http://www.donnawarren.com***************************************************
6) UNIVERSAL LIVING WAGE VICTORY ***************************************************
Travis County, the home of the Texas State Capitol, has endorsed the Universal
Living Wage. By a margin of four to one, the Travis County Commissioners,
led by County Judge Sam Biscoe, cast a historic vote on Tuesday, when
it became the first county in the United States to endorse the campaign for
income equity. The goal of the Universal Living Wage campaign is to
fix the federal minimum wage and ensure that anyone working a forty hour week
will be paid a minimum wage that will allow them to afford basic rental housing.

9) OHIO JOB TAX CREDITS TO WAL-MART ***************************************************
Policy Matters Ohio released a new report July 8 entitled Wal-Mart Special:
Ohio Job Tax Credits to America's Richest Retailer. The brief report,
by Zach Schiller, finds that last year the state of Ohio promised $10 million
in tax breaks to Wal-Mart to establish distribution and manufacturing
facilities here. These incentives were promised despite the facts that:
food distribution facilities can only serve a 150-mile radius (so probably
had to be in Ohio anyway); con- struction had begun on one project before
incentives were approved; and Ohio has been struggling financially while
Wal-Mart's profits last year were $6.6 billion. The brief also reports
on a $1.38 million tax credit to Kroger, another food retailer, given even
though the new distribution center was replacing older facili- ties elsewhere
in the state. The report makes several recommendations including:1.
Avoiding approving credits after construction has begun and avoiding giving
credits for distribution facilities which often have to be located in Ohio
anyway. 2. Requiring paybacks if credit-receiving companies are found
to violate labor laws. 3. More carefully considering credits given to move
from one Ohio community to another. 4. Providing the public with more information
about whether and why the credit was necessary. 5. Requiring better reporting
on wage range of jobs to be created by the project.***************************************************
