3) THE CORPORATIZATION OF UNIONS ***************************************************
Nearly every poll shows that workers favor having a union by a large majority.
According to an AP poll (8/30/01) "General approval for unions runs by
a nearly 3-1 ratio, roughly the same as in recent years but higher than
20 years ago, when it was less than a 2-1 ratio." Yet, unions continue
to stagnate or lose membership and also lose elections at an alarming rate.
Can this be attributed solely to employer resistance? ***More: http://labornotes.org/archives/2002/07/h.html***************************************************
5) OPPOSE THE YUCCA MOUNTAIN NUCLEAR DUMP ***************************************************
Yucca Mountain, located 80 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, is the only
site under consideration for a proposed repository to store 77,000 tons of
high- level radioactive waste from U.S. weapons sites and commercial nuclear
reactors. After years of study and billions of dollars spent, numerous technical,
environ- mental, and policy problems plague the project. In addi- tion
to problems with the Yucca Mountain site, the prospect of transporting nuclear
waste across the country to Nevada raises serious safety and security
concerns. Tens of thousands of shipments of this deadly cargo would be slated
to pass through as many as 45 states, putting at risk millions of Americans
who live near interstate highways and railroads. **More: http://www.citizen.org/atomicroad/articles.cfm?ID=7122***************************************************
6) MANY FACTORS MAKE RETIREMENT TOUGH FOR WOMEN ***************************************************
Two out of three working women earn less than $30,000 a year, and almost nine
in 10 earn less than $45,000. Working women on average not only sit out of
paid work 11.5 years as caregivers, those who return to the work force
may opt to work part time or in temporary jobs or in small businesses, retail
or service-sector jobs that pay less and may not come with retirement plans
and other benefits. ***More: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/money/77192_socsecfactbox05.shtml***************************************************

8) A TALE OF TWO COUPS: VENEZUELA AND ARGENTINA ***************************************************
April's big business-led coup in Venezuela failed, but international finance's
coup in Argentina has succeeded. Investigative journalist Greg Palast was
recently on assignment in Caracas and gives us the inside track on two very
different power-grabs. He notes that Venezuelan President Hugo offers a model
that challenges the free trade agenda and irritates Big Oil and the local
business class. Argentina, on the other hand, has had little choice but to
capitu- late to the World Bank, IMF and international finance institutions.
Palast turns his critical eye towards the two Latin American countries.

9) THE CORPORATE THEFT OF THE WORLD'S WATER ***************************************************
The first in a new series of book excerpts: Water, according to the "Washington
Consensus," is a human need, not a human right. These are not sernan-
tics: a human need can be supplied in many ways, especially for those with
money. But no one can sell a human right. ***More: http://tompaine.com/feature.cfm/ID/5875
There are places in the world where it's not a future crisis, it's now.
There are farmers going to their wells, and the wells have gone dry because
Coca-Cola got in there and bought up the water table. ***More: http://tompaine.com/feature.cfm/ID/5880***************************************************
