6) SUIT SAYS WAL-MART DIDN'T PAY WORKERS ***************************************************
The NY Times reported Tuesday that over 40 current and former Wal-Mart workers
interviewed over the last four months say Wal-Mart has forced or pressured
employees to work hours that were not recorded or paid. Federal and state
laws bar employers from making hourly employees work unpaid hours. Wal-Mart's
policies forbid such work. But many current and former workers and mana-
gers said an intense focus on cost cutting had created an unofficial policy
that encouraged managers to request or require off-the-clock work and avoid
paying overtime. ***More: http://www.nytimes.com/2002/06/25/national/25WALM.html***************************************************

8) STRIKERS AS TERRORISTS? ***************************************************
At the rate things are going, it won't be long before labor organizers are
being thrown into military prisons, held without warrant as "enemy combatants."
Tom Ridge, director of the Office of Homeland Security has been phoning
Jim Spinosa, head of the West Coast's Longshore- men's Union, saying that
a strike would be bad for the national interest. Next Monday sees the expiration
of the current three-year contract between the Longshoremen and the employers,
grouped in the Pacific Maritime Associ- ation. If the 10,000-strong longshoremen
go on strike, ports from Seattle to San Diego could shut down, meaning
a big jolt to the already floundering US economy. ***More: http://www.counterpunch.org/cockburn0627.html***************************************************
9) NADER TO BORDERS: DON'T LIMIT ACCESS TO BOOKS ***************************************************
Ralph Nader, Commercial Alert and 26 authors and scholars sent a letter Wednesday
to Borders Group CEO Gregory P. Josefowicz, asking him to reconsider his
"category management" plan which will likely reduce the range of
ideas in print and put small publishers out of business. ***More: http://www.commercialalert.org/PDFs/borders.pdf***************************************************
10) PUBLIC HEALTH PREVENTION EFFORTS UNDERMINED ***************************************************
Legislators, health advisers and General Accounting Office (GAO) officials
said at a House hearing Tues- day that President Bush's proposal to move public
health responsibilities from HHS to the proposed Department of Homeland Security
could "undermine the basic effort to keep Americans healthy" in
part because public health concerns would "take a backseat" to bio-
terrorism threats, the AP/Philadelphia Inquirer reported Wednesday. Congress
must approve the department, which would absorb operations, employees and
funds from exist- ing federal agencies, including parts of the CDC and
the NIH, and would have an annual budget of $37.5 billion and 170,000 employees.
The proposal would trans- fer programs that "help state and local governments
cope with outbreaks of naturally occurring diseases and patho- gens"
-- including the Office of Emergency Preparedness, the Strategic National
Stockpile and CDC divisions -- from HHS to the new department, a GAO report
released June 25 stated.***************************************************
