 5) MA GREEN AND RAINBOW COALITION PARTIES MERGE
***************************************************
The Massachusetts Green Party and the Rainbow Coali-
tion Party united their memberships into a single
political entity at a statewide meeting last weekend.
The merged party also endorsed candidates for state
political office: Dr. Jill Stein for Governor, Anthony
Lorenzen for Lt. Governor, and James O’Keefe for
Treasurer. "The Green Party isn't only growing through
the incremental process of persuading and registering
new members, one by one," said Ben Manski, a member of
the steering committee of the Green Party of the United
States and an activist working on building ties between
the Green and Progressive Parties in Wisconsin. More:

 6) CARTER FOR GOVERNOR IN MAINE: 2 STORIES
***************************************************
The Portland Press Herald reported Thursday that a
state agency has cleared the way for Jonathan Carter,
the Green Independent Party's candidate for governor
in Maine, to receive public financing for his campaign
over the objections of the Maine Democratic Party,
which questioned Carter's eligibility for the money.
The Democratic Party cannot appeal the decision by the
Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices.
John Baldacci, the Democratic candidate for governor,
could challenge it, but he will not, according to a
spokeswoman. Carter will get $41,885 from the state
this week for his primary campaign, even though he is
unopposed for his party's nomination. After the June 11
primary, Carter will receive at least $286,910 more for
the general-election campaign and possibly as much as
$860,730 more, depending on how much money his privately
funded opponents spend on their campaigns. More:

The Bangor News reported Wednesday that Jonathan Carter,
the Green Independent Party's candidate for governor in
Maine, has purchased an 18,000 gasoline- and electric-
battery-powered Honda Insight that he ill use as his
campaign car. Using his personal savings to buy the car,
Carter aid he's getting a lot of smiles and "thumbs up"
from those he meets on Maine highways as he tools along
in the aerodynamically sleek little vehicle.

During a press conference Tuesday at Blouin's Honda in
Augusta, where he bought the car, Carter offered some
of his thoughts on a state energy policy. The featured
attraction for the event was the Honda with its electri-
fying Monte Carlo Blue paint. More:

 7) GREEN PARTY POISED FOR MAJOR PUSH IN MA
***************************************************
Making its first major push in Massachusetts electoral
politics, the Green Party of Massachusetts on April 27
endorsed three candidates for statewide office and
seven for the Legislature, with all of them counting
on public campaign funding to reach a wider audience
than ever. The Clean Elections Law, with its promise
of millions of dollars in public support for candidates
for statewide office, will give those committed to a
liberal agenda on the environment and social and eco-
nomic policy an unprecedented vehicle to reach the
public, said Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate
for governor. More:

 8) NH FIRST STATE TO TACKLE GLOBAL WARMING
***************************************************
New Hampshire lawmakers became the first in the
country to pass a law to reduce global warming. The
measure is aimed at reducing emissions of carbon di-
oxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide – thus ad-
dressing global warming, acid rain, smog and airborne
mercury poisoning contributions by fossil-fuel power
plants. Although some environmentalists have opposed
a part of the bill that allows credit-trading with
out-of-state utilities for those unable to cut local
emissions by 2007, others have supported the plan and
called the compromise a major step forward. Even though
the new rules for emissions pale in comparison to the
Kyoto Protocol, the measure will serve as a model for
other states and the federal government to follow New
Hampshire’s initiative and take action in curbing our
role in climate change. More:

 9) AKRONOHIO.NET ALTERNATIVE NEWS SITE LAUNCHED
***************************************************
A newly formed collection of grassroots organizations
and individuals in the Akron-area has launched a new
media outlet. The Independent Akron Media [IAM] Pro-
ject publishes alternative news stories and events on
the website AkronOhio.net.

Due to the mass media's tendency to misportray, omit,
and marginalize important voices and stories in Akron's
many communities, IAM hopes to empower people to report
news stories from the grassroots. IAM strives to expand
the range of ideas, information, and news that helps to
inform and activate Akron-area residents on issues of
social, economic, and environmental justice, diversity,
peace, and the collective humanity of all.

The media project will be strictly non-corporate; no
advertisers or media headquarters in some other state
will have any influence over anything published by IAM.
The influence of power and money will not corrupt or
inhibit the desire and ability of people to talk about
issues of importance to them and their communities.

10) WASHINGTON POST EDITORIAL ON DAVIS-BESSE
***************************************************
The Washington Post published April 28 an excellent
editorial on the recent disaster at the Davis-Besse
nuclear power plant operated by FirstEnergy near Toledo:

"You wouldn't know it from the bland pronouncements
of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), but the
U.S. nuclear industry just had its closest brush with
disaster since the 1979 Three Mile Island accident.
The Davis-Besse nuclear power plant, located about 30
miles east of Toledo, Ohio, was operating with a rust
hole in the top of its reactor pressure vessel -- a
hole wide and deep enough to put your fist into. All
that was left to contain the reactor's highly pres-
surized supply of cooling water around the reactor
core was a three-eighths inch liner of stainless steel,
and the liner had started to bulge ominously. If the
liner had burst, it would have drained cooling water
vital for safety and also threatened the reactor's
emergency shutdown system." More:
