 1) FINAL CALL FOR GREEN CANDIDATES IN OHIO
***************************************************
The Green Party of Ohio is targeting seats in Ohio
that are uncontested by the Democratic party. In one
congressional seat, one state senate seat and 11
state seats (10% of the House) the Democrats have
failed to field candidates.

Logan Martinez, who is heading the search for Green
Party candidates, says that "it's the disorganization
and disunity in the Democratic Party and the power of
corporate money that has given the Republicans such a
grip on Ohio." Martinez says that the Greens are look-
ing for candidates across the board but are particu-
larly targeting seats in the Ohio House. (Filing date
for Greens/Independents in Monday May 6th.)

The Green Party is fielding lifelong Zanesville resident
Chad Perry in the 18th US House race. No Democrat is
running in this race. Frank Doden, Yellow Springs resi-
dent and English teacher at The Columbus School for Girls
in Bexley, will be in the 7th US House race against Demo-
crat Kara Anastasio and the winner of the Republican pri-
mary. Also, Alan Amstutz is a candidate for the Ohio House,
District 22, running against Republican Jim Hughes and the
winner of the Democratic primary.

While looking for candidates in all races this year,
the Green Party of Ohio Candidates Committee is also
targeting the Ohio house seats in the following areas:

Ohio Senate District 31 (Licking, Fairfield, Perry, Hocking,
   and eastern Pickaway Counties)
Ohio House District 35 (eastern & southern Warren County)
Ohio House District 55 (eastern Butler County)
Ohio House District 66 (northwestern Clermont County)
Ohio House District 67 (western & north central Warren County)
Ohio House District 71 (northern & central Licking County)
Ohio House District 74 (Williams, Fulton & Defiance Counties)
Ohio House District 75 (Paulding, Van Wert, Putnam & Henry Counties)
Ohio House District 77 (Preble, Mercer & 2/3 Darke Counties)
Ohio House District 86 (Clinton, Highland & Pike Counties)
Ohio House District 88 (Brown, eastern Clermont & western Adams Counties)
Ohio House District 94 (Coshocton & most of Muskingum Counties)

If you are thinking of running for any of the above political
offices or other offices as a Green, please contact Logan
Martinez (937-275-7259 or loganmartinez@hotmail.com) of the
GPO Candidates Committee.

But, hurry! Filing deadline for petitions is May 6 at 4 PM.

The party is also looking for people to work with these
candidates as campaign managers and other campaign volunteers.

 2) GREEN PARTY OF OHIO (GPO) RECOGNIZED BY FEC
***************************************************
In a letter dated 4/11/02, the Federal Election
Commission (FEC) states, in part:

" . . . the Commission concludes that the Green Party
of Ohio qualifies as a State committee of a political
party under the Act and Commission regulations."

The FEC action was taken at the request of the GPO,
supported by the Green Party of the United States in
Washington, DC.

 3) DEBATE GROUP SENDS NADER CHECK, APOLOGY
***************************************************
Ralph Nader received a letter of apology and a check
from the Commission on Presidential Debates April 16,
but no guarantees that he or other third-party presi-
dential candidates would get to participate in future
debates.

 4) GPO WEB SITE RANKS HIGH ON ALEXA SERVICE
***************************************************
The Green Party of Ohio Web site now ranks the highest
of any state Green Party Web site on the Alexa Internet
service. The site ranks 423,522 among Alexa users. Of
Green sites in the U.S., only greens.org ranks higher
at 301,244. The Green Party of the United States site
ranks 622,655. (The Ohio Democratic Party ranks 1,178,051
and the Ohio Republican Party ranks 3,074,766.)

Alexa Internet takes a unique approach to Web navigation
by injecting human intelligence into it. "At any given
moment, there are millions of people on the Internet
experiencing firsthand what works, what doesn't work,
what's relevant, what's cool and what isn't. Alexa taps
into this collective reserve of information, knowledge
and experience and transforms it into a free navigation
service that benefits everyone. Said another way, Alexa
provides the technology that allows everyone to share
their knowledge with everyone else, to everyone's benefit."

 5) ETHICS PANEL SPLITS VOTE ON CARTER ALLEGATIONS
***************************************************
A split vote on the state ethics panel Wednesday left
Maine Democratic Party officials pondering their next
move in a continuing effort to challenge Jonathan
Carter's publicly funded candidacy.

Carter, the Green Independent Party's nominee for
governor, said he will know Friday whether he will be
certified as a Maine Clean Elections candidate. Staffers
at the Commission on Governmental Ethics and Elections
Practices must certify at least 2,500 of the nearly 3,500
signatures and individual $5 contributions submitted by
the candidate.

 6) GREEN PARTY IN CALIFORNIA CAN'T BE IGNORED
***************************************************
Peter Miguel Camejo, who wants to be California's next
governor, has the kind of endorsement any Green Party
candidate would die for: Ronald Reagan once called him
"one of the 10 most dangerous people in California."

Camejo -- now a financial services executive -- doesn't
have the hefty campaign war chest of his rivals, Demo-
cratic incumbent Gray Davis and Republican Bill Simon.
But just as Green Party presidential hopeful Ralph Nader
made his own mark on the 2000 presidential race, Camejo
could prove dangerous in the 2002 governor's race --
particularly for Davis.

 7) N.Y. GREEN PARTY GOV. CANDIDATES VISIT ITHACA
***************************************************
While two of New York's Green Party candidates for
governor agree that current lawmakers are not doing
enough to protect the environment, they have different
ideas about which policy changes are the most urgent.

 8) UTILITY BUYS OUT CONTAMINATED OHIO TOWN
***************************************************
American Electric Power has agreed to buy an entire
town in Ohio that has been contaminated by sulfuric
acid from one of the utility's coal burning plants.
The company will spend $20 million to acquire about
200 parcels of land that make up the southeastern
Ohio community of Cheshire, relocating all 221 resi-
dents of the tiny hamlet.

10) U.S. PAPERS HAIL COUP AS PRO-DEMOCRACY MOVE
***************************************************
When elements of the Venezuelan military forced presi-
dent Hugo Chavez from office last week, the editorial
boards of several major U.S. newspapers followed the
U.S. government's lead and greeted the news with enthusiasm.

11) EX-CIA CHIEF DISSES ALASKAN OIL
***************************************************
From The Progressive Review's Undernews (4/18/02):

At a Capitol Hill press conference former Director
of Central Intelligence James Woolsey dismissed
claims that opening the Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge to oil drilling would improve America's
national security, and asserted that drilling the
Arctic would in fact weaken our energy security by
increasing our reliance on the vulnerable Trans
Alaska Pipeline.

"The bottom line is that we'll be dependent on
the Middle East as long as we are dependent on
oil," said Woolsey, who served as Director of the
Central Intelligence Agency from 1993 to 1995.
"Drilling in ANWR is not a recipe for America's
national security. The only answer is to use
substantially less petroleum."

Citing USGS estimates that indicate the amount of
oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would
be at best three tenths of one percent of the
world's known reserves, Woolsey asserted that
such a minimal amount of oil was not worth the
continued reliance on the pipeline. "A key
vulnerability of drilling in the Arctic Refuge is
the Trans-Alaska Pipeline," said Woolsey. "It was
shut down last fall by a drunk who shot one
bullet, it has been sabotaged and incompetently
bombed twice, and these people are children
compared with the sophistication of people who
attacked us September 11.

"Oil from ANWR is so far in the future and such a
small amount, that the negative features of it --
environmentally but primarily from my perspective
the vulnerability of the pipeline -- outweigh any
national security benefit claimed."

12) CLEVELAND SAYS "NO" TO NUKE WASTE TRANSPORT
***************************************************
City of Cleveland Council passed a resolution, which
was signed by Mayor Jane L. Campbell, on April 10,
"Renewing Council's opposition to the transportation
to high level nuclear waste through Ohio and the
storage of such hazardous waste at a site in Yucca
Mountain, Nevada." This is Mayor Campbell's first
public statement on nuclear waste since taking office
100 days ago.

13) NO HELP ON HEALTH INSURANCE FOR THOSE OVER 55
***************************************************
Proposed tax credits designed to help uninsured
Americans buy individual health coverage would not
be effective for adults age 55 and older, according
to a new study released on April 17 on the Health
Affairs website. The study also found that individual
coverage costs considerably more than group health
plans while providing inferior benefits, a finding
that was true for young adults as well as for older
adults. The Commonwealth Fund provided support for
the research, which was conducted by Jon Gabel and
colleagues at the Health Research and Educational
Trust. While the study found that a $1,000 tax credit
would be adequate for a healthy male in his 20s, that
amount would cover less than half the annual premium
costs for the majority of individual health plans
available to a healthy 55-year-old man. Moreover,
many individual plans provide neither prescription
drug benefits nor mental health coverage. Health
Affairs published the article as a web-exclusive.

15) DAVIS-BESSE NUKE PLANT FIX MAY NOT BE SOON
***************************************************
FirstEnergy Corp. faces the likely prospect of going
through much of the summer -- prime time to sell
electricity for air conditioning -- without the use
of its damaged Davis-Besse nuclear power plant.
