5) MANSOUR BEY CAMPAIGNS FOR TOLEDO CITY COUNCIL
***************************************************
On Monday, April 1, Green Party candidate Mansour
Bey kicked off his campaign
for Toledo City Council.
Over $700 was raised for the campaign at the kick
off.
Bey was one
of five candidates who met Mondays dead-
line and filed nominating petitions
with the Lucas
County Board of Elections to run in the May 7 election
for Toledos District 4 City Council seat.
The
election had been up in the air after the county
board of elections voted
not to hold it, citing con-
flicts with the state constitution. On March 28,
the
Ohio Supreme Court overruled the four-member elections
board, ordering
that the election proceed. The election
is to fill the remaining 21 months
of Edna Browns term.
She left council to take the seat in the Ohio House
of
Representatives once occupied by Democrat Jack Ford who
left his post
in the General Assembly after winning the
race for Toledo mayor in November.
District 4 includes
59 precincts in Toledos central city.
Folks
interested in volunteering to do phone banking or
door-to-door work should
contact Bey's campaign manager
Chad Olson at 419-255-5700 or throwthemuse@hotmail.com.
Anyone wanting to contribute to the Bey campaign, can
also contact Olson or
Anita Rios at 419-243-8772 or
rhannon@toast.net.
People living in District 4 can also
request a yard sign from Olson.
The
next meeting of the Mansour Bey campaign will be
at the Kent branch library
in Toledo on Mon., April 8
at 5:30 PM. All Green Party supporters, even those
who do not live in District 4, are welcome.

6) GROSS MISMANAGEMENT AT DAVIS-BESSE
***************************************************
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) sharply
criticized FirstEnergy Corp.
officials yesterday for
continually overlooking evidence that ultimately led
to massive corrosion of the reactor head. The corrosion
created a large hole
in the reactor's head that left
only three-sixteenths of an inch of stainless
steel
between the inside of the reactor and the containment
vessel in
which it sits.

NRC is to meet with FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating
Company April 10 to discuss

Davis-Besse reactor. For more information, see:

7) GREENS GROWING IN HAYS COUNTY, TEXAS
***************************************************
Two years after Hays County voters gave Ralph Nader
his second-best showing
in Texas, Green Party acti-
vists here are plunging into local politics, where
no third party candidate has been on the county
ballot in at least 15 years.

8) DEMS CHALLENGE
CARTER IN MAINE
***************************************************
The
Maine Democratic Party is gearing up for a poten-
tial legal challenge to
deny public campaign financing
for Green independent candidate Jonathan Carter.
In
a letter to state officials Friday, the party
alleged election officials are
destroying public
records that could prove that Carter - and perhaps
other
candidates - have not complied with the Maine
Clean Election Act.
If
that proves to be true, Carter would lose nearly
$1 million in financing,
and the Democrats would elimi-
nate a potentially serious threat against Democrat
John
Baldacci, Maine's 2nd District congressman and front-
runner in the
November race for governor.
The
Democrats still blame Carter for costing former
Democratic Gov. Joseph Brennan
the 1994 election, when
Angus King won his first term in a four-way contest.
Carter had only $25,000 to spend, in part because he
refused to take corporate
donations, but still captured
7 percent of the vote.
With
$1 million, political analysts think it's possible
Carter could garner 15
to 20 percent of the vote. And
with public financing, Carter could walk away
the winner
in this year's contest, which could ultimately include
more
than four candidates.

9) POLITICAL-EDUCATION GROUP FOR WOMEN OF COLOR
***************************************************
Last fall, Natalie Johnson Lee's vigorous city coun-
cil campaign and door-knocking
didn't simply produce
an upset win for the 5th Ward Green Party member
[in Minneapolis] - it gave her an idea.
"As
I was campaigning, I realized there were a lot
of individuals who did not
know a lot about government
- especially women of color," Johnson Lee
said.
So she is
now founding an organization called Sisters
in Politics to educate women of
color on the in's and
out's of local government.

10) U.S. GRANTS NORTH
KOREA $95 MILLION FOR NUKES
***************************************************
BBC News has reported that the U.S. government has
announced that it will
release $95,000,000 to North
Korea "as part of an agreement to replace
the Stalin-
ist country's own nuclear programme." In releasing
the
funding, President Bush "waived the Framework's
requirement that North
Korea allow inspectors to
ensure it has not hidden away any weapons-grade
plutonium from the original reactors."
This
approval represents only one stage of a multi-
billion dollar deal made during
the Clinton Admini-
stration, which Bush signed off on earlier this week
because he deemed it in the "national interest" to
have Westinghouse
build nuclear weapons-making capa-
city in an unstable Third-World dictatorship.

11) BBC & VISION-TV VIEWS OF 9-11
***************************************************
A BBC television report speculates that connections
among the CIA, the Saudis,
the Bushes and the Bin
Ladens caused the United States to turn a "blind
eye"
to terrorism before 9-11.

13) THE 1000 FOR 1000 FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN
***************************************************
The Green Party is asking for your help in building
a unique new fundraising
program that will help build
both the Green Party of the United States and
the
Green Party of Ohio.
The
1000 for 1000 Fundraising Campaign to raise our
first $1 million has begun.
For as little as $20 a
month, you can join this campaign and help build both
our national party and our state party.
For
those who want to participate in this campaign to
raise the first $1 million
for the Green Party, there
are various options. In addition to a one-time
gift, a
supporter can instead give in monthly installments of
$84 (12
months), $42 (24 months), $28 dollars (36 months),
or $20 (50 months). The
national goal is to find 1000
donors who will unite in contributing $1000
by Election
Day 2002, and help raise the Green Partys first $1 million.
This will help put organizers in the field to help state
Green parties and
local candidates. Also, donors have an
option to earmark half of their contribution
to their state
party. You can support the Green Party of Ohio while par-
ticipating in this national campaign simply by checking
a box just above the
Submit button on the contributions
Web page and have half your contribution
come to the
Green Party of Ohio.

14) D.C. GREENS CHALLENGE ART DISPLAY
***************************************************
The D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities has
commissioned local artists
to decorate statues of
100 donkeys and 100 elephants, symbols of the coun-
try's two major political parties. The statues are
scheduled to debut April
23. A lawsuit has been
filed in federal court to keep the donkeys and ele-
phants from being displayed publicly --- at least
until they're joined by
statues of sunflowers. The
sunflower is the international symbol of the Green
Party. The D.C. Statehood Green Party, argues that
putting out the donkeys
and elephants is unfair to
other parties.
