1) BECOME A MEMBER OF THE GREEN PARTY OF OHIO
***************************************************
Now 264 Ohio citizens have registered as members of
the Green Party of Ohio
(GPO) since the online mem-
bership registration drive began five weeks ago.
In
the past week, 45 more people have registered their
membership with
the GPO. Now we have members in 49
of Ohio's 88 counties.
You
can now see members listed by county at:
http://www.ohiogreens.org/membership/
The
renewed GPO will be two years old in two weeks.
Many states have had a Green
Party for much longer.
Two of the more established state parties are in
Maine and New Mexico. Maine currently has about
10,000 voters registered Green
and New Mexico has
about 11,000. These are states, unlike Ohio, in which
people can actually register Green when they register
to vote.
Help
grow our party here in Ohio. Join TODAY at:
http://www.ohiogreens.org/membership/register.html

2) SEVIGNY DECLARES FOR CT 8TH DIST. SENATE SEAT
***************************************************
Thomas J. Sevigny, co-chair of the Green Party of
Connecticut, has announced
he will seek the 8th
District State Senate seat in Connecticut held by
Sen. Thomas Herlihy, R-Simsbury. There are no
Democrats running.
In
a statement released this week, Sevigny questioned
Herlihy's leadership :
"Our state has more problems
than it deserves and more solutions than
it deploys.
One look at Sen. Herlihy's record and it is obvious
that he
is a defender of the status quo. He is the
leading opponent of campaign finance
reform and legis-
lation to clean up the Sooty Six, and has said nothing
about the problems of excessive property taxes and
urban sprawl that affect
so many citizens who live
within the 8th District. What is needed is visionary
and innovative ideas that deal with these complex
problems in a whole new
way, not the same old stale
rhetoric and simplistic sound bites that citizens
usually get from politicians."
Sevigny,
36, a Canton resident since 1994, is married
with two children. He received
a bachelor's degree
in history from Trinity College in 1995 and is cur-
rently a master's candidate in history at the college
and will graduate this
fall. He is a U.S. Air Force
veteran and a public safety dispatcher for Farmington.
Sevigny was the founding member of the Green Party
of Connecticut in 1996.
In 2000, Sevigny ran for 17th
District State Representative. He is a member
of the
steering committee of the Green Party of the
United States.

3) ATTORNEY TO ANNOUNCE HER CANDIDACY IN COLORADO
***************************************************
Alison Maynard, an attorney who fought to protect
stream flows in Snowmass
and stop development on
state lands across Colorado will announce her Green
Party candidacy for state attorney general April 2.
She is seeking the Green
Party nomination to run
against Democrat Ken Salazar.

4) LAW TO RUN FOR COUNTY COUNCIL IN MARYLAND
***************************************************
Lifelong Anne Arundel County, Maryland, resident
George Law kicks off his
Green Party campaign today
for a seat on county council. Law has owned and
managed Law Brothers Hardware in Ferndale for 24 years.
"If
we want to improve the quality of life in our
communities and neighborhoods
through improved public
schools, better environmental protection, and responsible
transportation, we must demand, and receive an equal
seat at the table of
county government," Law said.
Law
is a graduate of Glen Burnie High School where
he was active in sports, was
president of the Honors
Society, and won the Purnell Johnson Citizenship Award.
In addition, George attended Johns Hopkins University,
McCoy College, and
the University of Maryland. He is
a proud father of seven, including three
foster children
and an active member of his church, Unity By The Bay,
where he serves as occasional guest speaker and chairman
of the outreach committee.
Additionally, he is an active
supporter, volunteer, and mentor at the Lighthouse
Shel-
ter for the homeless in Annapolis. Law served three
years as a facilitator
and social activist for Unity Now
and organized anti-racism demonstrations
on their behalf.
He is a member of the Anne Arundel Green Party, an
organic
gardener, gourd grower, and past president of
the Maryland Gourd Society.

6) THE 1000 FOR 1000 FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN
***************************************************
The Green Party is asking for your help in building
a unique new fundraising
program that will help build
both the Green Party of the United States and
the
Green Party of Ohio.
The
1000 for 1000 Fundraising Campaign to raise our
first $1 million has begun.
For as little as $20 a
month, you can join this campaign and help build both
our national party and our state party.
For
those who want to participate in this campaign to
raise the first $1 million
for the Green Party, there
are various options. In addition to a one-time
gift, a
supporter can instead give in monthly installments of
$84 (12
months), $42 (24 months), $28 dollars (36 months),
or $20 (50 months). The
national goal is to find 1000
donors who will unite in contributing $1000
by Election
Day 2002, and help raise the Green Partys first $1 million.
This will help put organizers in the field to help state
Green parties and
local candidates. Also, donors have an
option to earmark half of their contribution
to their state
party. You can support the Green Party of Ohio while par-
ticipating in this national campaign simply by checking
a box just above the
Submit button on the contributions
Web page and have half your contribution
come to the
Green Party of Ohio.

8) THIS TIME, CARTER IS IN GOVERNOR'S RACE TO WIN
***************************************************
"This year's Green Independent party is strong in
ways it never has been
before. [Jonathan] Carter
[Green Party candidate for governor in Maine] and
his colleagues still are long shots, but not nearly
as long as they were 10
years ago.
"The
party has seven candidates running for the State
House of Representatives
and four running for the
Senate this year - three times as many candidates
as
it has ever fielded before."

10) TWO MILLION PROTEST IN ROME
***************************************************
At least two million trade unionists descended on
Rome last Saturday, filling
the city center with a
sea of red flags in a massive show of force against
plans by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to re-write
labor laws.
More
than 9,000 buses and 60 special trains carried
members of Italy's largest
union, the CGIL, from all
corners of Italy to Rome, bringing the capital to
a
standstill.

11) MORRILL CHALLENGES PENN BALLOT ACCESS LAWS
***************************************************
Michael Morrill, the Green Party nominee for governor
of Pennsylvania held
a press conference on the steps
of the state Capitol in Harrisburg Monday
to discuss
the initiation of legal action to open up Pennsyl-
vania's
ballot access laws.
Currently,
Pennsylvania law requires any person who
collects signatures from registered
voters to place
a candidate on the ballot to be a registered voter
in
the district where that candidate is running.
Since the Green Party nominates
its candidates using
slate nomination papers that can include multiple
candidates, this requirement makes the party's ballot
access efforts significantly
more complex than they
would be otherwise.
Morrill
discussed the details of a lawsuit being
filed by the Brennan Center for Justice
at New York
University on behalf of himself and several other
Green Party
candidates seeking to overturn this
requirement.

12) CO. GAINS FROM ENERGY REPORT RECOMMENDATION
***************************************************
The national energy report released in May 2001
embraced a reactor being developed
by a company that
has provided hundreds of thousands of dollars to
Republicans.

13) ENERGY POLICY MIRRORS OIL LOBBY'S PROPOSAL
***************************************************
The Washington Post reported Wednesday that President
Bush last year issued
an order on energy policy that
closely followed a proposed draft given to
the admini-
stration two months earlier by oil lobbyists, according
to
documents released by the Energy Department under
a court order.

14) MCKINNEY SPEAKS ON WAR AGAINST TERRORISM
***************************************************
Congresswoman Cynthia A. McKinney (D-GA) tells her
"Thoughts On Our War
Against Terrorism" (3/28/02):
An excerpt from McKinney's speech:
"After
September 11, we have OK'd the targeting and
profiling of certain groups of
people in America
while not arresting in any way the racial profiling
and discrimination that existed prior to September 11.
Mass arrests, detention
without charge, military tri-
bunals, and infringements on due process rights
are
now realities in America. Even more alarming are the
calls in some
circles to allow the use of torture and
other brutal methods in pursuit of
"justice." Sadly,
US administration of justice will be conducted
by an
Administration incapable of it. Interestingly, promi-
nent officials
explain to us that September 11 happened
because we are free. And "they"
hate us because we are free.
"Moreover,
persons close to this Administration are
poised to make huge profits off America's
new war.
Former President Bush sits on the board of the Carlyle
Group.
The Los Angeles Times reports that on a single
day last month, Carlyle earned
$237 million selling
shares in United Defense Industries, the Army's fifth-
largest contractor. The stock offering was well timed:
Carlyle officials say
they decided to take the company
public only after the Sept. 11 attacks. The
stock sale
cashed in on increased congressional support for hefty
defense
spending, including one of United Defense's
cornerstone weapon programs.
"Now
is the time for our elected officials to be held
accountable. Now is the time
for the media to be held
accountable. Why aren't the hard questions being
asked?
We know there were numerous warnings of the events to
come on September
11. Vladimir Putin, President of
Russia, delivered one such warning. Those
engaged in
unusual stock trades immediately before September 11
knew enough
to make millions of dollars from United
and American airlines, certain insurance
and brokerage
firms' stocks. What did this Administration know, and
when
did it know it about the events of September 11?
Who else knew and why did
they not warn the innocent
people of New York who were needlessly murdered?"

15) EFFECTS OF CLIMATE WARMING ALREADY IN EVIDENCE
***************************************************
Ecosystems around the globe are showing the effects
of global warming. Earlier
arrival of migrant birds,
earlier appearance of butterflies, earlier spawning
in amphibians, earlier flowering of plants - spring
has been coming sooner
every year since the 1960s,
researchers reported Wednesday.

16) SECRECY OVER TERROR PRISONERS IS AGAINST LAW
***************************************************
The Bush Administrations secrecy about hundreds of
detainees picked
up in a post-September 11 dragnet
is unlawful and the identities and alleged
offenses
of those being held must be revealed, a New Jersey
court has
ruled.

17) MORE ICE SHELVES FACE TROUBLE
***************************************************
The Antarctic's huge ice shelves may break up as ice
flows across the frozen
continent slow or even stop
and the global climate warms, a New Zealand climate
researcher warned. The collapse reported last week of
the Larsen B Ice Shelf
in Antarctica was "a wakeup
call to expect more collapses," said
Tim Naish, a
senior researcher at the government-owned Institute
of Geological
and Nuclear Sciences.
Such
collapses would have "a dramatic effect on global
climate" by disrupting
ocean currents, he said.
The
Larsen B ice shelf, a large floating ice mass on
the eastern side of the Antarctic
Peninsula, shattered
and separated from the continent. The ice shelf, which
has existed since the last Ice Age 12,000 years ago,
collapsed starting in
January with staggering speed
during one of the warmest summers on record
there,
scientists say. The lost surface area measured 1,040
square miles,
which would dwarf Rhode Island. The
collapse released 720 billion tons of
ice.
