4) GREEN PARTY MAY BE LARGEST THIRD PARTY IN MN
***************************************************
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported Thursday that
"[j]udging by the
total turnout [in Minnesota's pre-
cinct caucuses], the Green Party might
be able to
claim that it has equaled or surpassed the Indepen-
dence Party
as THE dominant third-party force in
Minnesota politics. The secretary of
state's Web site
reported the attendance of the Green Party caucuses
at
953 as of late Wednesday. That's about twice the
turnout at the Independence
Party's meetings, which
drew about 400 people, said Independence Party chair-
man Jack Uldrich."
"Patti
Hurd, the Green Party's Dakota County chair-
woman, said her group, which
made a strong showing in
city elections in Minneapolis last fall, is demon-
strating strong statewide popular appeal, and drew
45 people in Dakota County.
'We are reaching out,
gaining support daily. I think we are the next third
party,' she said."

6) GREEN PARTY CANDIDATE RECRUITS STUDENTS IN MA
***************************************************
From the Harvard Crimson (3/4/02):
Cambridge, Mass-- The Green Party's
gubernatorial
candidate is hoping the lure of some green will help
attract
Harvard University students from her alma
mater to help the campaign.
Jill E. Stein, the Green Party's candidate in Massa-
chusetts' much-watched
race for governor, began a
recruiting drive on local university campuses two
weeks ago, with bright orange fliers reading "Get
Big Money Out of Politics."
The campaign wants students to circulate petitions
and solicit donations
among other canvassing activi-
ties. In exchange, the students will take home
a
hefty portion -- fully 40 percent -- of the contri-
butions they bring
in to the campaign coffers, accord-
ing to campaign organizer Brian Sandberg.
The campaign
is looking to hire between 20 and 25 interns from
Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, Tufts Univer-
sity and Harvard, who each would work
from eight to
12 hours per week, Sandberg said.

7) DODEN OF YELLOW SPRINGS ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY
***************************************************
From the Dayton Daily News (3/3/02):
by Joanne Huist Smith, Dayton Daily News
"A member of Ohio's Green Party plans to make a bid
to represent
Ohio's 7th Congressional District.
"Yellow Springs resident Frank
Doden on Saturday
announced his candidacy at a meeting of the Green
Party
of West Central Ohio at the University of Dayton,
which is outside the district
made up of Greene and
Clark counties.
"Doden has until May 6
to file as an independent to
run in the November election. Next week in his
home
community, he plans to begin collecting the more than
2,300 signatures
needed to get on the ballot. 'I don't
think the typical, average American
is represented in
Washington, and I think corporate America and big
money
interests are represented very well,' Doden said.
"Doden is a high
school English teacher employed at
the Columbus School for Girls. He grew
up in a conserva-
tive farming community in northern Iowa, but said his
parents were the lone liberals in that part of the prairie.
"'My
parents were very political with lots of discussion
around the table,' Doden
said.
"A lifelong Democrat, Doden said he turned to the Green
Party out of a growing discontent with the 'ugliness' of
the two-party system
during the final days of the last
presidential election.
"'I've
watched the Green Party's growth and development
over the last couple of years,
and I was fascinated by
(Green presidential candidate Ralph) Nader's campaign
in
2000,' Doden said. 'I've always been a fan of his.'
"Doden
said he supports public financing of political
campaigns for federal and state
offices. He also favors
setting a different election day to make it easier
for
more people to vote.
"'The only way to give the public the
perception their
interests are being represented is to get the money out
of the campaign,' Doden said. 'Why vote the first Tuesday
of November? That
date was set when many in our country
were farmers. Other countries have national
election holi-
days, multiple election days or weekend elections.'
"Doden could face incumbent U.S. Rep. Dave Hobson,
R-Springfield, in
the November election. Hobson, in his
sixth term, must first go up against
three challengers
in the May 7 Republican Party primary. Other Republican
candidates who have filed for the primary are Ralph Apple-
gate, John Mitchel
and Steven Schaefer.
"Logan Martinez, acting facilitator of the
Green Party's
candidate committee in Ohio, said the party is looking
for
progressives to run for Congress, state and local
offices.
"'We're
particularly interested in people who want to
run for Congress or state representative,'
Martinez said.
'We're interested in challenging incumbents of both
parties
in every race we can.'
"For more information about Doden or the
Green Party,
contact Martinez at 937-275-7259."

8) STOP THE SPRAWL CAMPAIGN APPLAUDS COURT RULING
***************************************************
Friday the Ohio Supreme Court overwhelmingly ruled
that the Columbus City
Clerk broke the law when he
took the Ballot Initiative to Protect and Preserve
the Big Darby Watershed off the 5/7/02 ballot.
"Stop
the Sprawl" spokesperson and Green Party of Ohio
convener Paul Dumouchelle
said, "The City Clerk violated
the right of each and every city voter
when he broke the
law. The Ohio Supreme Court has protected the constitu-
tional right of every Columbus vote in this decision.
We applaud the Court's
ruling."
The
Stop the Sprawl Campaign urges voters to support
the ballot initiative to
Preserve and Protect the Big
Darby Watershed because:
1.
Urban Sprawl Spreads Police and Fire Forces too Thin.
Yes on the Darby Ballot
Issue means better police and
fire protection for City of Columbus neighborhoods.
2.
Urban Sprawl Takes Public Money Out of Existing
Neighborhoods. Sprawl at the
City's edge takes public
funds away from existing neighborhoods' needs like
fixing streets.
3.
Urban Sprawl is Destroying the Darby Creek Watershed.
Yes on the Darby Ballot
Issue stops new Columbus City
sewer service into the Darby Watershed for five
years,
giving local leaders time to plan for smart growth.
Without such
planning, unchecked development will
continue destroying the watershed.
The
Stop the Sprawl Campaign has been endorsed by
Franklin County Commissioner
Dewey R. Stokes, The
Sierra Club's Central Ohio Group and the Central
Ohio Green Party.

9) DEFEND EDUCATION IN OHIO
***************************************************
The Ohio Board of Education is considering inserting
"Intelligent Design"
creationism into the K-12 public
school science standards. There is a meeting
of the
State Board of Education Standards Committee scheduled
Monday,
March 11, 2002 to discuss this issue.

10) VERMONT TOWNS OPPOSE GE FOODS
***************************************************
From the ISE Biotechnology Project (3/5/02):
As
of 7 PM on Tuesday evening, there were reports
from 29 towns that debated
resolutions on genetically
engineered (GE) foods at town meetings in Vermont.
Of those, 26 towns passed resolutions opposing GE
foods, 2 towns tabled their
resolution, and one voted
it down.
Most
of the resolutions included language stating that
GE foods have been shown
to cause long-term damage to
the environment, the integrity of rural, family
farm
economies and can have serious impacts on human health.
Most resolutions
called upon legislators and congressional
representatives to support labeling
of GE foods and seeds,
in addition to a moratorium on the growing of GE crops.
In
addition, eight towns took steps toward ending the use
of GE crops within
their towns, whether by declaring a
town moratorium or urging that the planting
of GE seeds
be actively discouraged.
