1) 31 GREENS REPORTED AS WINNERS ON NOVEMBER 6
***************************************************
Results to date indicate that 31 Greens won election
on November 6 nationwide:
9 in Pennsylvania; 5 in
California; 3 in Connecticut, Maine and Minnesota;
2 in Colorado, Massachusetts and Washington; and 1
in Michigan and Virginia.
There are now 116 current
Green officeholders throughout the country.
For
more details on Greens who have won in 2001, see:
http://www.greens.org/elections/
For
the first time, Green Party candidates ran for
political offices in Ohio this
year. Though no Green
Party candidates were elected, growth in the party
continues and more candidates will be running in future
years. More details
on the Nov. 6 elections will be
in the next issue of this newsletter, but
results can
be seen now for the entire 2001 year at:
http://www.ohiogreens.org/candidates/candidates2001.html.
On
Nov. 6, Democrat Denis Dunn, endorsed by the Green
Party of Cuyahoga County,
won a seat on Lakewood City
Council. Paul Wiehl, endorsed by the Green Party
of
Southeast Ohio, may yet win a seat on Athens City Council.
After election
day, there were 389 provisional ballots to be
counted and Wiehl was behind
by only 13 votes (see:
http://www.athensnews.com/issue/article.php3?story_id=5321).

2) GREEN PARTY OF THE U.S. GETS FEC RECOGNITION
***************************************************
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) issued an
opinion Thursday recognizing
the Green Party of the
United States as the National Committee of the Green
Party. The decision, in response to a request to the
FEC from the Green Party
in August, follows the Green
Party's ground-breaking 2000 campaigns including
the
national campaigns of Ralph Nader and Winona LaDuke
for President
and Vice President. "The decision of
the FEC adds to the enormous momentum
the Green Party
now enjoys," said Dean Myerson, Green Party Political
Coordinator. "We are running more candidates, electing
more candidates,
gaining more members and support."
During
the party's annual meeting in Santa Barbara,
California last July, Green delegates
voted to esta-
blish a national party and to apply to the FEC for
national
committee status. Delegates also approved
growth plans that include opening
an office in
Washington, D.C. and hiring a team of field organi-
zers
for the mid-term election season.
"National
Committee status is a tremendous accomp-
lishment for the young party, one
that acknowledges
its place as the leading and fastest growing political
alternative in the United States," added David Cobb,
General Counsel
for the Green Party of the United
States. "It will help increase the
numbers of voters
who recognize us as the party of change, a serious
contender
on the political landscape."
National
Committee status will permit the Green Party
to accept contributions up to
$20,000 per year from
individuals, but internal Green Party rules cap such
donations at $10,000 per year. The party and its can-
didates also refuse
contributions from corporations.
"The
Green Party is the only political party to oppose
the big money that is corrupting
politics in America,"
said Steve Schmidt, chair of the party's Platform
Committee. "We're the only party that chooses to regu-
late itself more
strictly than the federal government."
The
Green Party of the United States is the national
political organization of
the Greens, in which 33
states are represented, with other states' memberships
pending. It organized the Green National Convention
in Denver in June, 2000,
at which Ralph Nader was
nominated to run for President and is recognized
among Green Parties around the world.

3) OHIO EPA UNDER INVESTIGATION
***************************************************
For 20 months, the U.S. EPA has been reviewing Ohio
EPA's performance at the
prompting of four Ohio
organizations: Ohio Citizen Action, Ohio Chapter
Sierra Club, Rivers Unlimited, and Ohio PIRG. On
Sept. 4, the U.S. EPA released
a scathing draft
report, and the next step is a public hearing in
Columbus.
WHEN: Tues., Nov.
13, 2001
Two sessions: 1:00 - 4:00 PM
6:30
- 9:30 PM
WHERE: Holiday Inn, 175 Hutchinson Avenue, Worthington
I-270
and the U.S. 23 exit
Each
session will start with a 30-minute presentation
from Bert Frey, Deputy Regional
Counsel for U.S. EPA's
Region 5, followed by up to one hour of questions and
answers, and then an hour and a half of public comments,
limited to three
minutes for each person.
The
U.S. EPA report confirms what Ohioans have known for
years - that the agency
we rely on to enforce environ-
mental laws and protect public health hasn't
done so.
U.S. EPA needs to hear directly from citizens from around
the
state about their experiences with Ohio EPA.

The report, background
information and directions to
the hearing are available from Ohio Citizen
Action's
web site, http://www.ohiocitizen.org.

4) OHIO WORKERS COST JOBS BY NAFTA AND WTO
***************************************************
Trade deals under NAFTA and the WTO have cost Ohio
workers 135,000 jobs between
1994 and 2000, according
to an Economic Policy Institute report released by
Policy Matters Ohio. Ohio's loss was the seventh
largest in the nation, and
99,500 of the jobs elimi-
nated were concentrated in the state's high-wage
manu-
facturing sector. Much of the job loss went undetected
because of
expansion in other sectors, such as the ser-
vice sector. Nationwide, the
study showed 3 million
jobs falling victim to trade policies between 1994
and 2000, when the job loss rate accelerated 6 times
faster than between 1989
and 1994.

5) SHARP RISE IN GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS
***************************************************
"Heat-trapping carbon dioxide emissions jumped 3.1%
in the U.S. last
year, the biggest one-year increase
since the mid-1990s, the Energy Department
reported
Friday.
"Carbon
dioxide emissions in 2000 were nearly 14%
higher than in 1990, the department's
Energy Infor-
mation Administration said. . . .
"The
unusually large increase in U.S. carbon dioxide
emissions was the result of
strong economic growth
in 2000, more use of fossil fuels due to colder
weather and a drought that impeded hydroelectric
power generation, the agency
said."
