1) CENTRAL OHIO GREENS ENDORSE JAMES E. MOSS
***************************************************
The Central Ohio Green Party endorsed James E. Moss’
write-in candidacy for Columbus City Council Oct. 26.
Mr. Moss requested the endorsement, saying, "I have
read the Platform of the Green Party of Central Ohio.
I believe in most of the principles of your platform
and it almost looked like I was seeing my platform
in a mirror!"

In particular, Mr. Moss has mentioned his initiative
to create a Citizen Review Board to oversee Police
actions; his support for award-based city council
structure, opposition to tax abatements that harm the
school system and alarm over pollution released into
the city’s air and water.

Green Party Candidate Committee Chairperson Keith
Johnson said, "We are proud to endorse Mr. Moss for
Columbus City Council. Voters in Columbus have a candi-
date who has demonstrated courage and integrity in his
service to the community - James E. Moss." Mr. Moss is
running as an Independent Write-In Candidate. Contact
the Moss Campaign to learn how to write-in his name on
the ballot.

2) MISSING THE OIL STORY
***************************************************
Preoccupied by anthrax and Muslim fanaticism, the
American media has yet to explore the murky ways of
international oil politics and the big players who
have a stake in what's unfolding.

3) MASSACHUSETTS CLEAN ELECTION UPDATE
***************************************************
On Oct. 4, a broad coalition of voters, candidates
and political organizations, including the state
Republican and Green Parties, filed a lawsuit with
the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court to force
the state to move forward with full funding for the
state's Clean Elections system.

4) NEW STUDIES SITE EVIDENCE OF GLOBAL WARMING
***************************************************
Climate warming already is thawing ice in Alaska and
disrupting annual cycles in the life of plants and
animals in Europe and North America, according to two
new scientific studies released Thursday.

5) ANTI-TERRORIST BILL PASSES
***************************************************
Acting within 24 hours of the House of Representatives,
the U.S. Senate approved Thursday sweeping anti-terror-
ism legislation that civil liberties groups said could
violate the Constitution and basic rights. The vote was
98-1 vote -- only Sen. Russ Feingold voting against.
The House passed the same measure by 357-66 Wednesday.

6) 25% SUFFER MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS
***************************************************
Twenty-five percent of the world's population will
suffer from mental health or brain disorders during
their lifetime, but few will seek or receive treatment,
according to a World Health Organization (WHO) report
released Oct. 4. The report, "Mental Health: New Under-
standing, New Hope," found that while 450 million people
currently suffer from "mental or neurological conditions,"
40% of countries have no mental health policy, and 67%
spend 1% or less of their annual health budget on mental
health. Further, half of the world's nations have just
one psychiatrist per 100,000 residents. The report also
found that even when assistance is available, nearly 67%
of people suffering from a known mental disorder never
seek help, and one million people commit suicide each
year. According to the report, more than 80% of schizo-
phrenics could be free of relapses after one year with
appropriate medications and "adequate family support."
In addition, the report found that as much as 60% of
people with depression could "recover" with "proper
antidepressants and therapy." WHO "urged" countries
to "draw up better policies" for mental health prob-
lems, including drug and alcohol abuse. The organiza-
tion also suggested that governments "shift away" from
large psychiatric hospitals to "better community care
programs" and do more to "ensure availability" of
medications.

7) ECONOMIC STATUS AND HEALTH IN CHILDHOOD
***************************************************
The Joint Center for Poverty Research examines how
health and income level are related, looking at how
income level affects care for elderly parents, high-
risk behavior among youth and other issues. The
articles are contained in the latest issue of Poverty
Research News.

8) CENSUS BUREAU REPORTS ON HEALTH INSURANCE
***************************************************
The Census Bureau reports that about 11.6 percent of
children under age 18 lacked health insurance coverage
in 2000, down 1 percent from 1999, representing a de-
cline in the number of uninsured children. Protected
by Medicare coverage, over 99 percent of people age
65 and over were insured while 18- to 24-years-olds
remained the least likely to have insurance in 2000.

9) ASTHMA IS #1 CHRONIC ILLNESS FOR CHILDREN
***************************************************
Asthma afflicts more children in the US than any
other chronic illness, with higher rates among African-
Americans and children in low-income families. Besides
missed school days and limits to childhood activities,
asthma can cause serious problems, including premature
death. The National Center for Education in Maternal
and Child Health provides a range of information and
helpful Web sites for health care professionals and
families.
