1) URGENT! STOP FAST TRACK!
***************************************************
Congress is using the September 11th tragedy to push
through Fast Track legislation
that would give Presi-
dent Bush sweeping powers to implement the Free Trade
Area of the Americas (FTAA). Under Fast Track, Congress
gives up its authority
to change the content of trade
agreements. The bill could come up for a vote
in Con-
gress as soon as next week. Call your Representatives
and tell
them not to sign away their power on trade
issues. Tell Congress to vote NO
on Fast Track.
TAKE
ACTION
Urgent: Stop Fast Track!!

5) ACLU SAYS SENATE TERRORISM BILL DANGEROUS
***************************************************
The ACLU is urging the Senate to reject the newest
version of proposed anti-terrorism
legislation, say-
ing that it poses significantly more danger to civil
liberties than the measure adopted earlier this week
by the House Judiciary
Committee. The ACLU reports
that the Senate legislation will allow for indefinite
detention of non-citizens, even if they have success-
fully challenged a government
effort to deport them;
minimize judicial supervision of federal telephone
and Internet surveillance by law enforcement; expand
the ability of government
to conduct secret searches;
give the Attorney General and the Secretary of
State
the power to designate domestic groups as terrorist
organizations
and block any non-citizen who belongs
to them from entering the country (paying
member-
ship dues to a designated organization would be a
deportable offense);
grant the FBI broad access to
sensitive business records about individuals
without
having to show evidence of a crime; and lead to large-
scale investigations
of American citizens for
"intelligence" purposes.

6) ABANDONED ANTHRAX DUMP SITE SITTING UNGUARDED
***************************************************
The Toronto Globe & Mail reported yesterday that
buried on Vozrozhdeniye
Island, a former Soviet bio-
logical weapons test site, is tons of powdered
anthrax,
the deadliest bacteria on Earth. There are also lesser
quantities
of plague, typhus, smallpox and a host of
other disease-causing organisms
at the site. The
island is abandoned and unguarded.

***************************************************
7) GREENS CALL FOR JUSTICE WITHOUT VENGEANCE
***************************************************
The Green Party of the U.S. calls for the Sept. 11
attacks to be treated as
an international crime
against humanity instead of a motivation for war.

***************************************************
8) NAFTA ALLOWS CORPORATIONS TO SUE GOVERNMENTS
***************************************************
In the Oct. 15 edition of The Nation, William Greider
reports on a provision
of NAFTA that allows corpora-
tions to sue governments if new laws threaten
future
corporate earnings. Greider claims that this sets a
troubling precedent
for the negotiations for the Free
Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).
