1) POSSIBLE NADER SUPER RALLY IN OHIO ON OCT. 10
***************************************************
We have received word of a possible super rally by
Ralph Nader in Toledo or Cleveland on October 10.
No more details are available at this time.

These rallies often only have a few days advance
notice. When we have more complete information, we
will pass it along to you in this newsletter or in
a special alert.

2) GREEN PARTY BEATS PENNSYLVANIA FEE
***************************************************
Ballot Access News reports the following:

"On August 20, U.S. District Court Judge A. Richard
Caputo, a Clinton appointee, struck down Pennsylvania's
mandatory filing fee for candidates, Belitskus v
Pizzingrilli, 3:cv00-1300, m.d. The plaintiff-
candidates were Green Party nominees last year.

"The U.S. Supreme Court issued two opinions striking
down mandatory filing fees, in 1972 and 1974. The fees
in the 1974 case were between $500 and $1,000.

"In this case, the fee was $100. The state argued that
the old U.S. Supreme Court precedents should not apply,
since the Pennsylvania fee is smaller than the fees in
those cases. But the plaintiff-candidate showed that
his living expenses in July 2000 (the month he was
required to pay the fee) were greater than his income,
and that he had no savings.

"Assuming the ruling is not overturned on appeal,
Pennsylvania will be required to permit indigent
candidates to avoid the fee, in future elections.
Although states are free to require petitions in
lieu of filing fee, that solution would make no
sense in Pennsylvania, since all candidates (whether
seeking access to a primary ballot or a general
election ballot) are already required to submit a
petition."

***************************************************

forts to stop the aggressive marketing of junk food
to schoolchildren.

5) EPA & OHIO'S AIR POLLUTION PROGRAM
***************************************************
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency may take
over much of Ohio's air pollution control program
after a lengthy review of the state's overall enforce-
ment of environmental laws.

The EPA has been reviewing the state's environmental
programs since January 2000 after four environmental
groups petitioned the federal agency to look into the
Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

The EPA could withdraw the takeover threat at the end
of the year if Ohio takes enough action.

6) GREEN PARTY OF MEXICO LEAVES COALITION
***************************************************
The following letter, received by the Green Party of
the United States, indicates that the Green Party of
Mexico left the coalition with President Vincente Fox
earlier this month:

Dear Greens of the world:

On the first of September, date of the first annual
report of the President of Mexico Vicente Fox, broad-
casted through the national and international tele-
vision and all media, the Green Party of Mexico made
national and international news.

Before each annual report of the President, each poli-
tical fraction, is given 15 minutes to make an evalu-
ation of the President’s government. In the Green Party
of Mexico’s intervention, our representative, Senator
Jorge Emilio Gonzalez, announced the rupture and break-
ing off relations with Vicente Fox, because of the non-
fulfillment of his campaign promises, specially the
ones dealing with environmental politics, social justice
and poverty.

We recognize that the President has been in power for only
10 months, but after 10 months there are no projects at
all, Vicente Fox has already announced his intention to
increase 15% taxes in medicines and books which will make
our poor people, poorer.

In Mexico more than 600,000 acres of jungles and forests
are lost each year without any government actions.

The Green Party of Mexico was co-responsible for the
democratic transition in Mexico, but we refuse to be
called co-responsible for the environmental devas-
tation and the deterioration in the standard of life
of millions of Mexicans.

We appreciate beforehand, all your support since we
will be attacked politically by Partido Accción
Nacional (PAN) and the government.
