2) TOLEDO ANNOUNCES GREEN PARTY CANDIDATES
***************************************************
The Green Party of Northwest Ohio has endorsed the
following candidates for local offices at a press
conference May 23:

Armiya Muhammed (for Mayor of Toledo)
Kwame Mu'Min (for Toledo City Council)
Steve Steel (for Toledo School Board)

Armiya and Kwame are running as Independents as all
Green Party candidates in Ohio involved in partisan
races must do until official party status is achieved
through submission of the party petition.

Steve is a longtime Green Party activist and former
school teacher, and is currently the communication
director for the Farm-Labor Organizing Committee,
AFL-CIO (http://www.floc.com).

The Green Party of Northwest Ohio is hosting a candi-
dates night on Fri., June 1 at 7:30 pm at Mano's
Restaurant (at the corner of Adams and 17th St.) in
Toledo to provide an opportunity for people to get
to know the endorsed Green Party candidates. Contact
Anita Rios at rhannon@toast.net or 419-243-8772 if
you plan to attend.

3) GREEN PARTY VICTORIES IN 2001
***************************************************
o In Massachusetts, Greens won three out of three
races, making it the seventh state with at least
three Green officeholders (California, Wisconsin,
Oregon, Colorado, Minnesota, New Mexico and
Massachusetts).

o In Wisconsin, Greens won five out of five races,
after winning all seven races they contested in 2000.
Greens won three races in Madison alone, including
two city council seats. This makes six Green office-
holders in Madison - two city council members, three
county supervisors and one school board member -
making up the largest number of Greens holding office
in one city. (Next highest are Santa Fe, NM, Santa
Monica, CA and Sebastopol, CA, all with three Greens
holding local office.)

Madison (pop. 210,000) is also the second largest
city in the U.S. to have a Green city council member.
San Francisco with 750,000 is the largest.

o California Greens won a city council seat for the
first time in conservative Orange County in Southern
California. This further demonstrates the Greens
growing base of support on 'quality of life' issues
in California, given the development pressures there.
This also now brings to 33 the number of California
Greens holding municipal office, including 19 city
council members.

o Greens won elected office for the first time in
Montana, winning a school board seat in Missoula.
This follows a city council victory in Laramie,
Wyoming last November, as the Green Party begins
to grow across the western plains.

o Both Green incumbents were re-elected - Gary Claus,
City Council, Silver City, NM and Matt Kelly, Selectman,
New Ashford, MA. This makes 40 out of 45 Green incumbent
city/town council members being re-elected, since Greens
first starting running for office in the U.S.

o The 13 victories in spring 2001 compare well to the
previous high total for an entire odd-numbered year
- 14 - set in 1997. Greens hope to far surpass this
total in 2001.

4) MARCH FOR JUSTICE IN CINCINNATI -- JUNE 2
***************************************************
The March for Justice, a peaceful and legal march,
is scheduled for Sat., June 2 at 11:00 AM at Fountain
Square in downtown Cincinnati. The purpose of the
march is to focus on stopping police killings, ending
racist practices within the Cincinnati Police Dept.,
and building social and economic justice.

Fountain Square is located at 5th and Vine. If you
are coming to Cincinnati from I-75, get off at the
5th street exit (this is a left lane exit) and pro-
ceed on 5th street east to Fountain Square. (Use
the center lane so you can turn left at Vine but be
in the right hand lane on Vine.) You can park under
the square in the parking garage. The entrance is
located on Vine, just north of 5th, from the right
lane. For more information, contact Gwen Marshall
at SWOHGP@fuse.net.

7) THE 2001 KIDS COUNT DATA BOOK & ONLINE DATABASE
***************************************************
Just released, the 2001 KIDS COUNT Data Book is now
available online. An easy-to-use, powerful online
database allows you to generate your own state pro-
files, graphs, maps, ranked lists, and more.

A project of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, KIDS COUNT
is a national and state-by-state effort to track the
status of children in the United States. By providing
policymakers and citizens with benchmarks of child
well-being, KIDS COUNT seeks to enrich local, state,
and national discussions concerning ways to secure
better futures for all children.

8) 75% OF UNINSURED MOTHERS IN LOW-INCOME FAMILIES
***************************************************
Nearly one out of every three women in families with
incomes below 200% of the poverty level, or $29,260
for a family of three, is uninsured, representing
three-quarters of all uninsured mothers in the U.S.,
according to a report, Millions of Mothers Lack Health
Insurance Coverage, from the Center on Budget and
Policy Priorities. In 1999, 5.9 million women with
young or school-aged children lacked health coverage,
the report says. Low-income women are nearly five
times more likely to lack coverage than their higher-
income counterparts. And the number of uninsured,
low-income mothers appears to be increasing -- between
1995 and 1999, the percentage of such women without
insurance increased from 29.2% to 32.3%.
